The sell-off that wiped out global stock gains for the year eased in Asia as authorities moved to contain the coronavirus, and oil futures edged higher after crude's biggest loss in almost seven weeks. Fujifilm rose on prospects its Avigan drug will be used to fight the disease, with Gilead having surged on WHO comments in support of its experimental remdesivir drug. But companies globally warned the outbreak will hit business hard:

The U.K. and the EU are increasingly at odds ahead of next week's trade talks, with each side accusing the other of backing away from past promises. The National Farmers Union warned the government of allowing imports of food that fall short of the country's own standards when it draws up trade deals. Nissan Motor warned its Sunderland plant remains at risk if Britain doesn't get a deal, leaving car sales to Europe subject to a 10% tariff.

Harvey Weinstein was convicted of rape and a criminal sexual act more than two years after allegations against the Hollywood power broker sparked the #MeToo movement. While he was found guilty of rape in the third degree, the former movie mogul was acquitted of the most serious charge, predatory sexual assault, and a count of rape in the first degree. He faces a five- to 25-year sentence on the criminal sexual act charge and up to four years on the rape count.
